Pretoria - "I can't stop shaking and crying," said an elderly woman from Riviera in Pretoria, after three armed men shot and killed her husband, who had been sitting next to her in bed, early on Monday morning. "It's dreadful and indescribable. "I'm still in shock and can't believe it happened," said the 65-year-old woman, who wished to remain anonymous for fear of further attacks.

Exit of whites 'unfortunate'
Johannesburg - The departure of whites from the public service had left a skills vacuum in certain areas, ANC treasurer-general Mathews Phosa said on Wednesday. "As an elected leader of the African National Congress, I want to ensure that we do not repeat the mistakes of the past," he wrote in a column in The Star newspaper.
One mistake was to allow a process that led to too many casualties of well-meaning, skilful...

Poverty, parenting cause crime
Cape Town - Poverty is one of the major factors contributing to the current surge in violent crimes, the Centre for the Study of Violence and Reconciliation (CSVR) said on Monday. Releasing the CSVR's preliminary report on the causes of violence in the country, CSVR representative David Bruce said poverty played a role in the commission of serious offences such as murder, rape and aggravated robbery.

This is not freedom
I am appalled at the impact that another looming strike is going to have on the country tomorrow. However, I am not referring to the economic impact. I am talking about the flagrant denial to freedom of choice and freedom of movement. A simple right that is entrenched in our Constitution!
I have just had a discussion with some of our staff members about freedom after they came to inform me that they may not be at work tomorrow because of the...
